About RhWR

RhWR engages the public on issues that affect the well being of the RHWO. Best Management Practices for RHWOs will be published soon. RhWR will be distributing them and helping land managers implement them.

RhWR continues to engage in and support research that we began in 2008 at Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve (CCESR) and also other locations. This research includes RHWO nest location and monitoring and other activities.

The RhWR has been publishing “The REDHEAD” since January 2007. The newsletter is archived here. You are encouraged to access the archive and download any copy you would desire. Please let us know how we can improve it.

History
The North American distribution of Red-headed Woodpeckers (RHWO) can be seen here. Dr. Jim Howitz has been studying birds at Cedar Creek Ecosystems Science Reserve (CCESR) since 1975 and gives a brief history of RHWO locations from then until 2012. The Red-headed Woodpecker Recovery’s (RhWR) studies started in 2008 and are reviewed through 2024 in a series of research summaries from 2010 to 2024.
